These trainers are great for practicing stress draws. Partner up with a buddy and replicate reality attacks and see if you can actually get your knife into play. If you've never done this before, it is going to be a wake-up call. You will learn real quick that you had better be able to punch, kick, or move before you drop your guard to pull a knife while someone is pounding you in the face.
The "back" story:
A good friend of ours is a knife dealer and had been carrying these for several years. He decided to get out of the training knife business since most of his sales are at gun shows and live knives sell much better than training gear. While we think these trainers are great for stress draw training, they do have their limitations.
The major issue is the thin striking edge that creates pain by contacting bone or sensitive tissue.
Compare the 2 edges in the picture. The wide striking surface of the TAK Training Knife (top) spreads out the pressure so you feel less pain. This allows you to strike harder and react more in line with reality training. Chance of injury is reduced.
You could spend well over $75 for a similar name brand folding training knife. However, the edge of the name brand trainer is the same width as the Ronin in the picture.
Folding trainers for stress draw practice, TAK trainers for low to moderate intensity training, TAK Rubber Band Guns, and padded Bogner trainers for full intensity training; they ALL have their place in your gear bag.
